Ok folks. There have been a lot of talk about "cleaning house" with these mega churches. I have some questions I am hoping you all will answer for me. ;)

A little background:
My family likes this church (I live far away) that is interesting. I have heard things about it. But my last trip up there this past month, I was able to see for myself what this church is. It is non-denominational. (Nothing wrong with that mind you...just trying to show you what I saw.) I walked in and it was so big I got lost trying to find the nursery. After dropping the baby off, I was directed into this HUGE foyer that must have been as big as 5 of my houses! :totally shocked TV's, coffee stands, help center, etc. After walking in through some doors, I came into a room that looked like a warehouse. It was made of cinder block. There were two projection screens on either side of the "stage". There were bleachers behind me, :confused and rows of seat on the floor part. The band was playing. The songs WERE uplifting! The people were dressed all differently. Some in dresses, others is short shorts! :duh The pastor came up and started preaching. They are doing a series of the ten commandments. The sermon was great! Then the band came up for a few songs, the lights turned up and the service was over.

I felt strange being there. I just didn't "feel" the Lord speaking to me. The service was great, and me made a lot of good points. It just didn't feel right. My family don't have a church home, or anything. But they go here, because they don't like any of the other churches. Would this, in your mind be considered a mega church? And if so, how would you deal with this?

It has taken my family YEARS to even think about church. So I don't want them to stop going! However, I am not sure this is a good church.

I am not good with words either. I tried to tell my family and ask if this is a good thing. I got blasted out the door. :ranting and venting

I am asking those here to help me. Can you provide scriptures about these mega churches and why they are bad? I keep fumbling through the Bible. :blushing I am still learning so much.

Hi Pinky ~

I'll "bite". Hmmm. Well, my first impression is that although this church that your family attends didn't strike you in an overwhelming fashion on your first visit, is no reason to discount it. You did enjoy the sermon and felt the pastor / teacher made some good points. Good solid biblical teaching that lifts up the LORD is most important. It is better that your family attend there than to not have any spiritual connections at all.

No scriptural precedence exists that I know of regarding "mega-churches". I attended a mega-church a few years ago. It was a Calvary Chapel, and it was around 3000 people when I started attending, and over 13,000 when I left. (I left because I moved to Florida.) The drawbacks to a mega-church is getting "lost in the shuffle", not really connecting intimately with others. On the other hand, there are so many ministries, programs and outreaches to meet all sorts of needs. One can be fed in a mega-church and one can be used to feed others.

There are still good and godly congregations that exist. Some are small, some, especially in lthe larger metropolitan areas can get quite large.

Unless you see some horrendous sin or outgrageous unbiblical teaching being done at that church, allow your family to enjoy their time there, and let them go with a blessing. If I were you, I'd consider offering them an apology since you may have offended them with your concerns. If they truly belong to the LORD, He will see to it that they get properly taught in His Word.

Hope this helps.

Sherry

hi pinky - i go to a "mega church" in manheim, pa. i love it. there's something for everyone. ALL are welcome. the size of the church doesn't matter as long as the truth of Jesus is taught. people go, they like it, they invite others, they like it, they invite others, etc etc. my church was started in a garage by a handful of people 20 years ago. now there is just alot more coming every weekend. don't fear it just because its big. it may not be something for you personally, but that doesn't make it "bad".

cheers,
Jz

I actually go to a church with 5000+ people in it. The pastor is incredible. He studied in Israel and gives some incredible insight to the Word that I would not totally understand on my own. God has used the pastor in showing me how to give my all to Jesus.

With that being said, the down side was for the first 3 years or so, I went in and out of that church with my wife and we didn't know a soul, but I loved the teaching very much. I was fed and I craved it.

Here's how God answered my dilemma:

After the Passion of the Christ came out, I asked God what He would have of me and I met a Small Group leader from that church that actually worked with me. It was a "chance" meeting (ok, God probably set us together to speak :))

From that point, I felt like I was in a small church embedded inside a big church and that experience has had a dramatic impact on my life. I became a teacher and then took on my own group. Most groups are 6 to about 15 people. God has given me 35 so far. We have all the home of a little church and we pray earnestly for each other, worship together, study, we reach out to our community and we fellowship together. It's like a family with God as the head. I love it.

If you like the big church, see if they have Small Groups. God can use that to change your life if you find the right people.

God bless,
