VERY INTERESTING! - NOTADOC =============================================== http://www.radiationdetox.com/depleted-uranium-detox.htm How to Detox Your Body of Depleted Uranium Residues, the Effects of Radiation, and Radioactive Contamination It's sad but true that there are thousands of scientific references and medical studies out there on the fact that radiation and radioactivity can harm you, yet despite millions of dollars spent by the government to study radiation, virtually nothing is available about a detoxification diet or nutritional supplements you might use if you are exposed to radioactive contamination. Here's some of the information we do know from the only book in the world on the topic. Keep this information in the back of your mind as it may one day help save you or someone you know. Most people are aware taking potassium iodide (KI) or potassium iodate (KIO3) tablets will help block your thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine should there ever be a dirty bomb explosion or nuclear power plant mishap such as the Three Mile Island incident. In 1999, another such accident happened in Tokaimura, Japan where several individuals died from radiation exposure in a fuel processing facility. What people don't recognize is that potassium iodide or iodate tablets only protect the thyroid gland and do not provide protection from any other radiation exposure, so taking them should not give you a false sense of security. It's important to detox your body after radioactive exposure! One question is, what do you do if KI or KIO3 tablets aren't available during an emergency? Interestingly enough, according to research by Ken Miller, health physicist at the Hershey Medical Center, he found that an adult could get a blocking dose of stable iodine by painting 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approximately 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination. Potassium iodine tablets are best, but if they're not available this is the next best thing. An entirely different problem arises after you've been exposed to radioactive contamination because now you have to get rid of any radioactive particles you may have ingested through the air you breathed, water you drank, or food you ate. Some people suggest Epson salt, Clorox or clay baths to remove any residues on your skin and to leach out any heavy metals you may have absorbed, but the big worry is internal contamination. To gain some insights into what to do, we have to turn to the story of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. At the time of the atomic bombing, Tatsuichiro Akizuki, M.D. was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Francis's Hospital in Nagasaki and he fed his staff and patients a strict diet of brown rice, miso and tamari soy soup, wakame, kombu and other seaweed, Hokkaido pumpkin, and sea salt. He also prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets since they suppress the immune system. By imposing this diet on his staff and patients, no one succumbed to radiation poisoning whereas the occupants of hospitals located much further away from the blast incident suffered severe radiation fatalities. Much of this positive result has to do with the fact that the sea vegetables contain substances that bind radioactive particles and escort them out of the body. This is why seaweed sales usually skyrocket after radiation disasters, and why various seaweeds and algae are typically used to treat radiation victims. In Chernobyl, for instance, spirulina was used to help save many children from radiation poisoning. By taking 5 grams of spirulina a day for 45 days, the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk even proved that children on this protocol experienced enhanced immune systems, T-cell counts and reduced radioactivity. Israeli scientists have since treated Chernobyl children with doses of natural beta carotene from Dunaliella algae and proved that it helped normalize their blood chemistry. Chlorella algae, a known immune system builder and heavy metal detoxifier, has also shown radioprotective effects. Because they bind heavy metals, algae should therefore be consumed after exposure to any type of radioactive contamination. In 1968 a group of Canadian researchers at McGill University of Montreal, headed by Dr. Stanley Skoryna, actually set out to devise a method to counteract the effects of nuclear fallout. The key finding from their studies was that sea vegetables contained a polysaccharide substance, called sodium alginate, which selectively bound radioactive strontium and eliminated it from the body. Sodium alginate is found in many seaweeds, especially kelp, and since that time the Russians have been seriously researching the use of their own kelps from Vladivlostok, from which they have isolated the polysaccharide U-Fucoidan, which is another radioactive detoxifier. Because miso soup was so effective in helping prevent radiation sickness, the Japanese have also done research identifying the presence of an active ingredient called zybicolin, discovered in 1972, which acts as a binding agent to also detoxify and eliminate radioactive elements (such as strontium) and other pollutants from the body. The kelps and algaes aren't the only natural foods with radio-detoxifying effects. In terms of fluids to drink, black and green tea have shown "radioprotective effects" whether consumed either before or after exposure to radiation. This anti-radiation effect was observed in several Japanese studies, and studies from China also suggest that the ingredients in tea are radioactive antagonists. In short, after any sort of radioactive exposure you want to be eating seaweeds and algaes along with almost any type of commercial heavy metal chelating formula to bind radioactive particles and help escort them out of the body. Whether you're worried about depleted uranium, plutonium or other isotopes, this is the wise thing to do which can possibly help, and certainly won't hurt. Many nutritional supplements have been developed for the purpose of detoxifying heavy metals, most of which contain the algaes and plant fibers and other binding substances. Basically, an anti-radiation diet should focus on the following foods: · Miso soup · Spirulina, chlorella and the algaes (kelp, etc.) · Brassica vegetables and high beta carotene vegetables · Beans and lentils · Potassium, calcium and mineral rich foods · High nucleotide content foods to assist in cellular repair including spirulina, chlorella, algae, yeast, sardines, liver, anchovies and mackerel · Cod liver oil and olive oil · Avoid sugars and sweets and wheat · A good multivitamin/multimineral supplement Yet another benefit of the sea vegetables rarely discussed is their high mineral content, which is a bonus in the case of radioactive exposure. Consuming natural iodine, such as in the seaweeds, helps prevent the uptake of iodine-131 while iron inhibits the absorption of plutonium-238 and plutonium-239. Vitamin B-12 inhibits cobalt-60 uptake (used in nuclear medicine), zinc inhibits zinc-65 uptake and sulfur is preventative for sulfur-35 (a product of nuclear reactors) incorporation by the body. Since nuclear workers are potentially exposed to radioactive sulfur, this means that workers in the atomic power industry need a higher content of sulfur in their diet. MSM supplements provide a source of dietary sulfur, but thiol supplements such as cysteine, lipoic acid and glutathione serve double-duty in this area because they help detoxify the body and attack all sorts of other health problems as well. The immune system is usually hit hard after radiation exposure, and a number of steps can be taken to help prevent opportunistic infections after a radioactive incident. Though the full dimensions of the protective mechanism is still unknown, Siberian ginseng is one form of ginseng that exerts a definite radioprotective effect and has been demonstrated to lessen the side effects of radiation. It was widely distributed by the Soviet Union to those exposed Chernobyl radiation and is commonly used to help cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. Consuming Reishi mushrooms is another proven way to bolster your immune system after radiation exposure and helps reduce the damage from radiation. It's been used to decrease radiation sickness in animals and help them recover faster after potentially deadly exposure. Panax ginseng has prevented hemorrhaging after radiation exposure, prevents bone marrow death and stimulates blood cell formation, so it's another supplement to add to one's protocol. In short, yeasts, beta glucans, bee pollen and various forms of ginseng have all been shown to bolster the immune system after radiation incidents. In terms of radiation burns, aloe vera has a proven ability to treat serious radiation burns and offers other radioprotective effects, and can easily be grown in your house. The amino acid L-Glutamine can be used to help repair the intestine in case of the gastrointestinal syndrome usually suffered due to radiation exposure, and a variety of substances can help rebuild blood cells to prevent hematopoietic syndrome. Those particular foods include beet juice, liver extract, spleen extract, and shark alkyglycerols. Most oncologists don't know that shark liver oil, with alkyglycerols, can help platelet counts rebound in days. Depleted uranium is currently in the journalistic spotlight because US weapons are made from this material, and after being fired leave a legacy of depleted uranium dust in the environment, which anyone can absorb. Because the kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure, military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium carbonate complex. In areas contaminated by depleted uranium dusts, it therefore makes sense to switch to drinking slightly alkaline water and to favor a non-acidic diet to assist in this detoxification. Any of the heavy metal detoxifiers, such as miso soup, chlorella, spirulina and seaweeds, are also commonsense warranted. Another thing you can do is use homeopathics for radiation exposure. People commonly argue over whether homeopathics work or not, but if you assume the position that they produce no results whatsoever then you must also assume that they certainly won't hurt you, which means the only loss from using them is a few dollars. Frankly, there are countless cases and double-blind studies where homeopathic tinctures do provoke physical healing effects in the body. Therefore they are a viable adjunct treatment option. One homeopathic, in particular, is URANIUM NITRICUM (nitrate of uranium) which homeopaths suggest should be used in cases of depleted uranium exposure or uranium poisoning. Not just soldiers or civilians exposed to battlefield dusts, but uranium miners and radiation workers may find it quite useful. While we've discussed just a few of the many supplements and protocols you can use to help detox the body of the lingering results of radioactive contamination, including the residues of depleted uranium, the last thing that might be of interest is that there is a plant that is a natural geiger counter. The spiderwort plant is so sensitive to changes in radiation levels (its petals change color upon exposure) that it's often used as a natural radiation detector (dosimeter), just as they use canaries in mines as detectors of poisonous gas. Some people like knowing that they have an ongoing monitoring system for radiation in the environment, and this is just another tip available in "How to Neutralize the Harmful Effects of Radiation or Radioactive Exposure." |

HI NOTADOC! :good posting JUST WONDERING, IF THIS WOULD WORK FOR PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF, WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH " 25 RADIATION TREATMENT EXPOSURES" AFTER THE REMOVAL OF BREAST CANCEROUS MALIGNANT TUMOR? MY FLESH HAD SEVERE BURNS, NEEDED TO BE TREATED; WON'T GO INTO DETAILS. THE SURGERY BARELY HURT, BUT THE RADIATION TREATMENT STILL CAUSES ME PAIN 3 YEARS LATER! SO GLAD I REFUSED CHEMO THERAPY, WHICH WAS "STRESSED" THAT I WOULDN'T BE HERE A YEAR LATER. THE CHEMO WOULD HAVE KILLED ME BACK IN 2003 FOR SURE, NO DOUBT ABOUT. TRUSTED GOD, AND I'M STILL HERE 3 YEARS LATER. THANKS! IN JESUS' LOVE, Valerie

Blessings Valerie, Your quote: "JUST WONDERING, IF THIS WOULD WORK FOR PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF, WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH " 25 RADIATION TREATMENT EXPOSURES" To be precise, yes and no! I believe the person who wrote the article and/or book was a Russian with "nuclear" experience secondary to Chernobyl. He was speaking specifically to people exposed to radiological fallout and "depleted" uranium which comes from our weapons systems since the late 1980s. In these scenarios the radiation becomes attached to dust and dirt particles (metals/minerals) in the air. These radioactive particles are inhaled or ingested into our body and remain there, continuing to give off radiation, causing harm to our tissues and sometimes those we are closest to. These people are "radioactive." Unlike most "medical radiation treatment," where a short burst of radiation is focused to destroy tissues, but those tissues do not become "radioactive" themselves. There are some medical treatments where radioactive pellets are actually placed within the tissues which would cause "radioactivity" to some degree/time. His treatment of giving quantities of natural minerals (kelp) is simply supplying our body with enough non radioactive minerals so that the body will not use the same radioactive minerals from the "fallout". This is exactly what we do in the medical community with the potassium iodine to protect the thyroid. Using the algaes (you might want to add Cilantro to that list), helps remove (chelates) the heavy metals/minerals from the body which will also be removing the radioactivity with them. Now, many of our modern-day medical problems can be linked to a deficiency of minerals which are easily asimulated into our tissues. His diet high in minerals can eliminate many of these medical problems. His treatments are not harmful as long as you are not allergic to iodine, etc.. A high mineral diet may cause problems, but not when you include the foods that also remove the "heavy metals." Most of us have some degree of toxic metal contamination. The best example would be mercury from our fillings, fish, deodorants and immunizations. This mercury and other metals impair our immune system. Therefore, this treatment would benefit your health status, but you probably do not have radiation in your treated breast that needs to be removed. Now, your breast has experienced a tremendous amount of trauma and destruction. I have no idea what your specific cause of pain might be, because there are many possibilities. And the treatment, if any would be relative to the cause. It is very common for women who have gone through any portion of the "standard treatments" to have breast pain of unknown etiology (translation: the doctors do not know the cause.). There can also be pain or swelling in the adjacent arm and hand. How many lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels have been removed or destroyed? These are draining immune cells and toxins from the breast to be eliminated from your body. What portion of the pain is from scar tissue (from surgery and/or radiation), or is it adhesions (different tissue surfaces sticking together and no longer moving normally)? The older radiation treatments could cause rib fractures years later, along with lung and cardiac problems. People parish, for lack of knowledge. There isn't a single "health-care provider", traditional or alternative, who can heal you. Only the Lord can accomplish that, and usually by one of two mechanisms. Rarely, this is done by a "miracle." And usually, by the mechanisms He established in man, when man was created. But we can help Him by providing the ingredients and environment for His "healing mechanisms" to work. To do this you must accomplish two things: First; provide the ingredients for the healing and repair. Second; remove all the debris and toxins from your body. Rarely, will God or the doctor do those things for you. You must take responsibility for these actions, yourself. Despite what "man" might say, the breast is a miraculous, fatty immune factory. Do you realize, that they have shown in studies, that if you place a bacteria or virus on a nipple, that within two hours the breast will have produced antibodies for that organism in the milk. When I first read that, I had a revelation. That's why infants put everything in the mouths and why men are fascinated with breasts. The organisms in the child's environment go on the child's hands and objects; the hands and objects go into the mouth which goes to the breast. Two hours later when the baby feeds, he receives antibodies against the organisms in his specific environment along with whatever antibodies mom has developed for herself. Then dad comes along and messes with mom's breasts allowing her to produce antibodies for everything good old dad has come into contact with that day. Amazing isn't it? I wonder if the body naturally sends the cancers to the breast were all this "immune activity" is centralized? Just wondering. First of all, blood supplies and lymphatic drainage are difficult when the breasts are continually "tightly restrained." If your breasts are "lumpy", a very messy but effective treatment is known as the "castor oil pack." Many health food stores have the materials and instructions. But if you need them, I will write them down. "Civilized" people today are extremely deficient in the omega-3 fatty acids and have an overabundance of the omega- 6 fatty acids. The ratio should be 1:1, but what we are receiving in our foods is the ratio of 1:15 - 20. In the 1950s they were successfully treating brain cancer in Germany with omega-3 fatty acids and protein found in foods such as cottage cheese. The brain happens to be made up of fat, proteins, sugar and water. Well, so is the breast. In the late 1990s they gave women 14 grams of omega-3 fatty acids a day, and discovered that the fat in the breast changed from the six to the omega-3, and it greatly reduced their risk of breast cancer. I have successfully treated many cases of arthritic and fascia (connective tissue) pain with the 14 grams of the omega-3 fatty acids also. Now 14 grams is a lot (14 - 1000 mg capsules a day) of either the fish oils or flax seed oil. The easiest and most economical way is to grind the flax seed's yourself. (Just this alone, dropped my total cholesterol 40 points.). The seeds cost about $1 to $2 a pound in the health food or grocery store. Pickup an electric coffee grinder which will usually cost you (one time) $15 to $20. Grind freshly 3 1/2 to four tablespoons of the seeds each day. I put them in my "health drink," but some people sprinkle it on their cereal, or salad. This should be done with caution if you are on any type of "blood thinners". I prefer to place my patients first on the daily omega-3's, then adjust their "blood thinners" accordingly if needed. If you find that you are bruising easily, you need to decrease your dose. Has your radiation caused anemia? "The life is in the blood." A miraculous treatment for anemia (if your bone marrow and liver are still functioning) is a product called Barleygreen (Green Magna may be substituted. It is Barleygreen with extra herbs.). Hemoglobin is the molecule in your red blood cells that collects the oxygen, and is one of the determinants of anemias. Chemically it is a prurine ring with an iron molecule in the middle which makes the blood red. Chlorophyll (the plants blood), is a prurine ring with magnesium in the middle which makes the chlorophyll green. (1/2 of the heart patients with low potassium are also low in magnesium). The doctors usually prescribe "rock" iron for anemia, usually with very poor results. People weren't designed to eat rocks. The plants were designed to eat rocks. The plants dissolves the "rock" iron and incorporates it into its carbohydrate which is easily asimulated by man. Our source of iron is red meats and dark green leafy vegetables (Barley grass). Barleygreen is concentrated and freeze-dried Barley grass, kelp, and rice which are considered one of the "Super Foods." One tablespoon of BarleyGreen is equal to 35 tablespoons of the fresh grass (which would you prefer?). The only thing that works quicker, is a blood transfusion with much greater risk. For many this is an "energy booster." The white cells in the blood are the main tissues that fight the "invaders" of the body. A very simple way to increase your white cells during any infection, would be to induce a fever. This can be done with mild exercise, or better yet, a sauna or steam bath. For every 1 degrees Fahrenheit you raise your body temperature, you will increase your white cells four fold. Another beneficial treatment to stimulate the white blood cells which is mentioned in the above article are Glucans. Glucans appear to stimulate (irritate) the large white blood cells called macrophages into action. These cells are a primary defense system for our bodies, identifying abnormal conditions and activating the appropriate therapeutic response. They literally devour bacteria, foreign cells, dead and dying cells, mutated cells, cancerous cells, and other negative invaders. Beta glucan's stimulation of macrophage cells produces a cascade of immune events, boosting immune response, stimulating the production of immune cells and improving host resistance. (A trustworthy Christian source would be Seagate : http://www.seagateproducts.com/ ). Your body removes its toxins by urine, stool, sweat/skin, and exhaled breath. One of the most important organs is your liver. It not only has to detoxify everything you ingest and encounter, it also has to detoxify and removes all of the dead cancer cells. It performs a tremendous amount of work and goes through a tremendous amount of abuse. It can become sluggish, and everything can "backup." Therefore the liver needs cleansing, and especially during any type of illness. I will give you a link to a couple of cleansing procedures which were common in hospitals many years ago. One was replaced because the doctors preferred to perform surgery, and the other was removed from the textbooks simply because of the jokes. Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse http://www.poplarbythebrook.com/Healing/li...der_cleanse.htm I have probably given you far more than you ever wanted to know, but that just happens to be what the Lord has created me to be. If you have any questions, simply ask. Shalom, Notadoc |

Very interesting, I have a related question Doc: you mention Chlorella algae. Is that a natural product, would I find that in a drug store? I'm asking because I swallowed a piece of tooth filling while eating chicken and reading at the same time, and the reading took all my attention. I show some signs of mercury poisoning, it's apparently stored in my toes, a mild numbness starts to settle in. Have been to local Docs here and they have no idea, another said they cannot get the 'drugs' to treat it (we're on an island here). there is local seaweed farming though...any idea how to get the metal out of the body by myself? |

GREETINGS GEO, CHLORELLA IS FOUND IN HEALTH FOOD STORES AND SOME DRUG STORES. IT CAN ALSO BE ORDERED ON LINE. ONE SOURCE: Chlorella http://store.mercola.com/index.asp?CartId=...2-AE0B5325894F} =========================================== EXCERPTS: Mercury Toxicity and Systemic Elimination Agents http://www.mercola.com/article/mercury/mer...elimination.htm Chlorella Algae and other aquatic plants possess the capacity to take up toxic trace metals from their environment, resulting in an internal concentration greater than those of the surrounding waters.87 This property has been exploited as a means for treating industrial effluent containing metals before they are discharged, and to recover the bioavailable fraction of the metal.88 Chlorella has been shown to develop resistance to cadmium contaminated waters by synthesizing metal-binding proteins.89 A book written for the mining industry, Biosorption of Heavy Metals,90 details how miners use these organisms to increase the yield of precious metals in old mines. The mucopolysaccharides in chlorella's cell wall absorb rather large amounts of toxic metals similar to an ion exchange resin. Chlorella also enhances mobilization of mercury compartmentalized in non-neurologic structures such as the gut wall,91 muscles, ligaments, connective tissue, and bone. High doses of chlorella have been found to be very effective in Germany for mercury elimination.92 Chlorella is an important part of the systemic mercury elimination program, as approximately 90% of the mercury is eliminated through the stool. Using large doses of chlorella facilitates fecal mercury excretion. After the intestinal mercury burden is lowered, mercury will more readily migrate into the intestine from other body tissues from where chlorella will effectively remove it. Chlorella is not tolerated by about one-third of people due to gastrointestinal distress. Chitosan can be effectively used as an alternative in these individuals. Chitosan makes up most of the hull of insects shellfish and also bind metals like mercury from the lumen of the intestines.93 94 95 Cilantro Omura determined that cilantro could mobilize mercury and other toxic metals rapidly from the CNS.96 97 Cilantro mobilizes mercury, aluminum, lead and tin stored in the brain and in the spinal cord and moves it into the connective tissues. The mobilized mercury appears to be either excreted via the stool, the urine, or translocated into more peripheral tissues. The mechanism of action is unknown. Cilantro alone often does not remove mercury from the body; it often only displaces the metals form intracellularly or from deeper body stores to more superficial structures, from where it can be easier removed with the previously described agents. The use of cilantro with DMSA or DMPS has produced an increase in motor nerve function.98 ==================== THE DMSA & DMPS ARE SOLUTIONS GIVEN IN THE VEIN FROM THE DOCTORS, WHICH WOULD CAUSE A MORE RAPID REMOVAL OF THE METALS. I BUY THE CILANTRO IN THE GROCERY STORE, FOUND WITH THE SPICES. I THROUGH 1 OR 2 TABLESPOONS IN MY "HEALTH DRINK" WITH WHATEVER ELSE I PLAN TO ADD THAT DAY. THERE ARE GREATER RISKS USING THE IV MEDICATIONS BECAUSE THEY WILL SUCK THE METAL RIGHT OUT OF YOUR FILLINGS. FOR CONDITIONS LIKE AUTISM, ETC. YOU SHOULD HAVE THE FILLINGS REMOVED FIRST. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU READ THE ABOVE AND ALSO THE FOLLOWING LINK. (AT LEAST THE FIRST LINK. THE OTHERS MAY HELP CLARIFY OR CONFUSE.) THESE PROTICALS ARE FOR THE MORE RAPID PROCEEDURE AND THEREFORE GREATER SIDE EFFECTS. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SCARE YOU. http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/200603070...trunc_sys.shtml 7 April 2006 Uranium’s Effect On DNA Established The use of depleted uranium in munitions and weaponry is likely to come under intense scrutiny now that new research that found that uranium can bind to human DNA. The finding will likely have far-reaching implications for returned soldiers, civilians living in what were once war-zones and people who might live near uranium mines or processing facilities. Uranium - when manifested as a radioactive metal - has profound and debilitating effects on human DNA. These radioactive effects have been well understood for decades, but there has been considerable debate and little agreement concerning the possible health risks associated with low-grade uranium ore (yellowcake) and depleted uranium. Now however, Northern Arizona University biochemist Diane Stearns has established that when cells are exposed to uranium, the uranium binds to DNA and the cells acquire mutations, triggering a whole slew of protein replication errors, some of which can lead to various cancers. Stearns' research, published in the journals Mutagenesis and Molecular Carcinogenesis, confirms what many have suspected for some time - that uranium can damage DNA as a heavy metal, independently of its radioactive properties. "Essentially, if you get a heavy metal stuck on DNA, you can get a mutation," Stearns explained. While other heavy metals are known to bind to DNA, Stearns and her team were the first to identify this characteristic with uranium. Depleted uranium - what is left over when the highly radioactive isotopes of uranium are removed - is widely used by the military. Anti-tank weapons, tank armor and ammunition rounds are just some of the applications. "The health effects of uranium really haven't been studied since the Manhattan Project (the development of the atomic bomb in the early 1940s). But now there is more interest in the health effects of depleted uranium. People are asking questions now," Stearns said. Her research may shed light on the possible connection between exposure to depleted uranium and Gulf War Syndrome, or to increased cancers and birth defects in the Middle East and Balkans. And closer to home, questions continue to be asked about environmental exposure to uranium from mine tailings; heavily concentrated around Native American communities. "When the uranium mining boom crashed in the '80s, there wasn't much cleanup," Stearns said. Estimates put the number of abandoned mines on the Navajo Nation in Arizona at more than 1,100. Notadoc, are you a naturopath - you mentioned your patients? I second Notadoc's recommendation for Omega-3's. I take a high dosage of fish oil a day and it pretty much eliminated my achy joints and also significantly decreased my heart arrhythmias (I have atrial tachycardia). I think the fish oil helps decrease inflammation in my body. Notadoc, Can you recommend any natural remedies for my sinuses? I can't breathe at all through my nose, only my mouth for the past three years. It all started when I was pregnant. A lot of women have trouble with nasal congestion when they get pregnant but mine totally stopped up my nose and it never got better even after giving birth. Also do you have any recommendations for IBS (irritable bowl syndrome)? I would appreciate any help! |

Thank you Doc ! - exellent info and resource, now I know why I couldn't find the DMSA & DMPS so far, my previous instructions didn't tell me about the complications with existent fillings. I'll try the Cilantro & Chlorella base ingredients, mixed with chopped garlic slowly stirred into a 5000mg vitamin C juice. Let's see if my stomache can take it. |

Blessings Twinkle, Twinkle's quote: "I think the fish oil helps decrease inflammation in my body. " Yes, the omega-3 fatty acids are an "anti-inflammatory" in the body. Your sinus problems would probably be worse without the omega-3. Sinuses and irritable bowel syndrome. Would I be presumptuous to think that you might have been on a fair amount of antibiotics? I was surprised to discover a few years ago that irritable bowel syndrome was the No. 1 diagnosis made by gastroenterologists. There are many theories concerning the cause, and there probably are multiple causes, but almost all of these patients have a condition which is called "dysbiosis." This is the lack of, or abnormal balance of organisms in the intestinal tract. Frequently irritable bowel syndrome begins after a strong course of antibiotics which are indiscriminate and will kill any bacteria that are susceptible. The good and the bad bacteria indiscriminately. If the syndrome wasn't initially caused by the antibiotics, the traditional treatment with antibiotics for irritable bowel will give you the same result. This then results in an intestine either lacking bacteria, colonized by harmful bacteria, or yeasts and fungus. Taking more antibiotics may give you temporary symptom relief during a flareup, but it exacerbates the problem. Those intestinal bacteria are extremely important. They not only help you digest your food, they fight off harmful bacteria/organisms and are actually a part of your immune system (manufacturers over 20 types of interferon). The treatment is to mainly re-establish the intestinal environment by colonizing it with "good bacteria." It does help and speeds up the healing process to eliminate any yeast or fungus if present. There are some great (but expensive) prescription medications that can be prescribed but rarely considered by your doctor. He/she might give you a few pills if you report frequent yeast or fungal infections with antibiotics. (With some antibiotics you need to hold off taking the prescription antifungal medication until you have completed your antibiotics.). There are some nonprescription antifungals such as caprilic acid, olive leaf extract and others. An excellent source of information and treatment of any yeast or fungal infections may be obtained from Doug Kaufman who believes that almost every disease is caused by fungus. He is wrong on that point, but he is close. Fungal causes are the most ignored by the medical community. It is usually a diagnosis of last resort. I believe he even has a discussion board where you may glean a great deal of information. He's at the following link: Know The Cause http://www.knowthecause.com/ The most important thing is to take probiotics, which are good bacteria like acidophilus. "Live" cultured yogurt, and other cultured foods are great. But if you really want to take care of the problem, I would suggest you try "Healthy Trinity" from Natren. It is expensive, but you'll get pharmaceutical quality "live" bacteria that will give you the greatest benefit. You might have to start slowly because there is a battle going on for your intestine. But I would recommend to gradually increase the "Healthy Trinity" to one pill with each meal (three times a day) until symptoms are resolved. After that the recommended one capsule a day or the fermented/cultured foods. Increase your intake again for a few weeks after taking antibiotics. (By the way, the three links I'm giving you are all reportedly Christians.). NATREN http://www.natren.com/index.htm Again I must stress that the most important thing are the "good bacteria." After that, for the flareup of symptoms, a good home treatment would be activated charcoal. You can purchase them in capsules or in bulk. Just take 3 - 6 capsules during any flareup, and keep repeating every 10 to 15 minutes until symptoms resolve. This is also a great treatment for nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. (Flu symptoms). The side effects of activated charcoal are constipation and it turns your stools black. (So don't freak out). One major caution! Activated charcoal will bind 350 times its weight in toxins and most other things in your digestive tract. That means, it can make any other medicines you might have taken two hours before or two hours after the charcoal of no effect. We commonly give the charcoal for poisonings and ingested drug overdoses. ========================================= I have treated an awful lot of sinuses, but I do not recall any of them associated with pregnancy, but I have heard of such happening. I have no idea what the association might be. Commonly, women with conditions such as lupus, have tremendous symptom relief during pregnancy secondary to all of the hormones (natural anti-inflammatories). Typically, sinus problems are from viruses or allergies. If it is a chronic condition, you'll typically find an allergen as the cause. And if you are continually exposed to that allergen, you'll continually have a battle on your hands. The No. 1 treatment for allergies, is the discovery of and the removal/avoidance of the allergen. This can be difficult. You try to remember what locations/foods/environment makes your symptoms worse. And then by trial and error, you temporarily eliminate that exposure to see if you have had improvement. There are blood tests (RAST) that can determine possible allergies, and also a torture test (unless you enjoy needles) by an allergist. Around 1999 the Mayo Clinic discovered that 100 percent of their patients with chronic sinusitis undergoing surgical treatment had fungus and yeast cultured from their sinuses. Somebody call Doug Kaufman. LOL! Many sinus and asthma problems can be greatly reduced with "allergy free air filters" to their central heating and A/C, or installing an air purifier. The best ones produce ions plus ozone, and if they contain an ultraviolet light, it will also eliminate many viruses. (One brand: Pionair). The key to the treatment of the sinuses is "plumbing." All a sinus is, is an air pocket within the "skull" bone, lined with a mucous membrane, with a drain out the nose. Bacteria, fungus, viruses and allergens become trapped in the sinus. The mucous membranes swell and close off the drain. That drain, when normal, is about the same diameter as the head of a straight pin. So it doesn't take much to plug it up. When the bacteria, viruses and fungus are trapped in this warm moist area, they multiply and give off gases. The volume expands, but the bone doesn't. Pain!!! We usually treat with antibiotics and possibly decongestants and nasal sprays. The blood supply to the sinuses is very poor, therefore our pills lose their effectiveness. Antibiotics and steroid nasal sprays will also increase fungal growth. For chronic problems the otolaryngologists (nose specialists) have a few treatments. They can push a tool up that "drain" to try to drain the swamp. Surgically they can go in and "make windows" in that bone, creating a larger drain. And a new method of pushing a catheter with a balloon on the tip, up into the sinus, inflating the balloon, breaking the bones, making a larger drain. "The treatment is plumbing." Now, what can we do at home to open those sinuses and avoid the "Nazi doctors". Heating pads over the sinuses, plenty of fluids, anti-inflammatories, and snorting steam may all help. For those with allergies, sinus irrigation (kind of gross) but it works. Saltwater (saline) sprays, commercial nasal irrigation kits from the Internet or pharmacies work well, and are used to keep the sinuses open. But what can we do to get them open in the first place? My answer is Afrin nasal spray (or the generic equivalent). Many doctors don't like it, but they don't use it in the way that I prescribe. It should only be used to initially open the sinuses or immediately when they first begin to plug and not for continually use (that would cause a rebound effect that people call an "addiction"). The steroid nasal sprays, Olive leaf extract sprays, and nasal irrigation are used to keep the sinuses open. Afrin is a decongestant like pseudoephedrine, but instead of going through the bloodstream, you place it right on the swollen nasal tissues. This is how it's done: Lay on your back, on your bed or couch with your head hanging over the side with your nasal passages pointing up. Put three drops (not sprays) in each swollen nasal passage, and lay there for three minutes. Then put three more "drops" in each swollen nostril, and lay there for three minutes. Then for the 3rd time, place three drops in each nostril, and lay there for three minutes. (Three drops in each nostril, for three minutes and three times.). Now, you can get up do whatever you want for 10 minutes. If they are still blocked after 10 minutes, go back and repeat the process (three times three times three.). If at anytime you feel a "burning sensation" in your sinuses on one side, stop the process on that side because that indicates that that sinus is now open. You simply do the process, until the sinuses open. Some people feel a release of pressure, some people experience a large flow of mucus. You simply continue the process until you get the sinus open. What we are doing, is applying a decongestant directly on the swollen tissues. You don't need the large sprays according to the instructions, because that excess will basically simply drip down your throat or out your nose. You instill three drops and give it a little time to start shrinking those outer tissues and opening up the drain. This allows the next drops to penetrate deeper. And you continue until they are open. Drain0! Once they are open, you keep them open with decongestants, sprays or irrigation. Of course you need to deal with the cause if known. This may also require other medications such as antihistamines. Other than boosting your immune system, I'm still looking for a good treatment for allergies. An excellent source for a quality olive leaf nasal spray would be Seagate. Seagate Olive Leaf Nasal Spray http://www.seagateproducts.com/index.html =============================================== Your quote: "Notadoc, are you a naturopath -?" No. They are doctors also. It would be illegal for me to claim to be a doctor. But I am licensed to practice medicine. Throughout my career almost everyone calls me doctor. I was an army corpsman, an EMT, and a paramedic. Then I finally went to medical school and became a PA (physician assistant) in 1984. I'm licensed to practice medicine in two states (I have worked in 5) with full prescriptive privileges. I have also worked independently in emergency rooms and have staffed rural and remote clinics. I have replaced doctors and have worked at their same level within the specific environment. But I'm Notadoc. Medicine is definitely a "practice." You're constantly learning. I kind of take it personal when I notice that your "standard" treatments aren't really working. Being a "lover of the truth" (but not The "loveroftruth" -- though she once claimed to be Notadoc.), I then search out treatments that do work. And I don't care if they come from a naturopath, herbalist or chiropractor. As long as it is the Truth. Many of the things I have found were actually practiced in Western medicine at one time, but abandoned for something "modern." My practice of medicine changes because the Lord is continually changing me, and bringing me closer to the Truth. And of course, that can cause problems from the "powers that be". Twinkle, I could use some of your help too. I have been out of work for some time now, and could really use your prayers. Shalom, Notadoc |

Wow, thanks for all that great information Notadoc! I appreciate your expertise. I printed it out so I can go over it more carefully later. As for antibiotics, I don’t think I’ve had more than the average person but I do think they are partially responsible for my IBS. It started after I was sick and had an injection of antibiotics (because my wedding was the next day and I had laryngitis). After that I had mild IBS but about six months later I had severe food poisoning after eating a Cuban sandwich and that’s what really pushed me over the edge and my IBS got much worse. I have tried probiotics before but it didn’t really seem to help – I think though I never gave it long enough. The longest I’ve taken them is three months in a row. I will check out the Natren website that you recommended. Maybe the brands that I tried before weren’t that good. I’m pretty sure though that my problem is bad bacteria in my gut though it’s so hard to reverse it. The reason why I’m pretty sure of this is because digesting carbohydrates is what I have a problem with. If I go on a serve low carb diet I do MUCH better but low carb diets make me feel weak and sick. Your mention of Yeast or Fungus is a possibility too. I noticed that you mentioned fungus can also be trapped in the sinuses. I wonder if my ibs and sinusitis problems are realated. Perhaps I have some type of fungal infection that moved from my intestines to my sinuses. Concerning the sinuses, I hate to say it but I am addicted to Afrin (I use it at night). I just couldn’t take not breathing at night and I couldn’t sleep so I started using it. I have gotten off of it for months at a time but I was just miserable. I want to get off of it again though so I can try some of your recommendations. The ENT gave me lots of different meds (steroid sprays) to try and nothing worked. He also suggested that I get allergy testing but at the time my insurance covered very little and it was just too expensive. I just got new insurance so I will have to check what they cover. All those medical treatments that you described really freak me out though (pushing up a drain, making windows, catheters and breaking bones)! When I was off of the Afrin at times my nostrils did open up enough where I could do nasal irrigation (with a netti pot) with saline but it didn’t seem to help . I would like to try the Olive Leaf nasal spray that you recommended. I also just ordered the following product to try: http://www.drdavidwilliams.com/c/sinupret.asp Have you heard about this product? Do you think it will help?
You got them! Please let us know when you get work so we can rejoice with you! |

Blessings Twinkle : Acidophilus and other probiotics are live organisms. And they will not grow and multiply in your intestine if they are dead on arrival. They are killed by heat and a portion of them will die in the acid of your stomach. Most yogurt in our stores today is pasteurized, which not only kills the bacteria, but destroys all the enzymes found in the milk for digestion. When you buy acidophilus in the store, only purchase that which is kept in a refrigerator. And even then you are not assured how they were handled prior to refrigeration. Natren not only comes from a lab licensed to produce pharmaceuticals, the bacteria are in a matrix which protects them in the stomach, and it comes to you directly from the lab in a refrigerated package. That's why it's more expensive. Makes you wonder how much of the probiotics you purchased really survived the trip. The people at Natren are the "experts" in the United States on probiotics. Taking significant amounts of probiotics will eventually overwhelm the harmful bacteria, yeast and fungus in the intestine. Taking garlic, olive leaf extract, and crypilic acid will help eliminate the yeast and fungus quicker. (Unless you can get your physician to prescribe antifungals --Diflucan). The bacteria will greatly enhance the digestion of many foods, but you might want to also add pancreatic enzymes, especially when you are eating carbohydrates. This is my recommendation for those who have had their gallbladder removed though "ox bile" is more specific to their problem. Large doses of "quality" pancreatic enzymes is also used in the treatment of cancers. (long story but you usually don't have to go with the more expensive items simply to enhance digestion.). I truly doubt that a fungal infection migrated from your intestines into your sinuses. But both the sinus and the intestines are areas that can be easily compromised with antibiotics, allowing a secondary pathological growth from the same course of medication. I have read that in the early 1950s they were producing antibiotics which included an antifungal medication. They stopped it for some reason, probably cost, or because most antifungal medications have a bad reputation (bordering on physician paranoia -- I'm speaking from experience) of raising liver enzymes. The liver enzymes increase because the liver is trying to remove from the body the dead fungus. Physicians and specialists are continually handing out the steroid nasal sprays, and I have never seen them work for someone who has already become congested. I tell my patients, you open the sinuses with Afrin, and you keep them open with the steroid spray. The steroids are a strong anti-inflammatory that usually takes weeks to months to ever open a sinus passage. They never reach the passage, and only reach the end of the drain. Once the passage is open, you can coat the entire area with the steroid which will reduce inflammation and also reduce you're allergic response. The steroids will also increase your susceptibility to fungal and yeast infections. That's where the olive leaf extract nasal spray comes in. it is antibacterial and antifungal/yeast. But again, even that will work poorly if the drainage passage isn't open. For those who have been "addicted" to Afrin, the steroid spray is an excellent way to go initially, then back off the steroid spray as tolerated and switching to the olive leaf nasal spray and sinus irrigation. Your condition is chronic, because your sinuses are continually exposed to the allergen. Now that allergen is either coming into the nasal passages from the outside, or it's growing in the sinus itself. You'll never be cured until you address the source/cause. As Doug Kaufmann says: "If you always do, what you have always done. You'll always get, what you always got." I quote that a lot. I have read a lot of Dr. David Williams work and consider most of it very reliable. But those herbs will never open your sinuses, but they may help on keeping them open or preventing a relapse. The problem with anything taken oral with regards to the nasal passages or sinus, is the poor blood supply to the area. It's difficult to get the oral antibiotics and decongestants to the area, it would be no different with oral herbs. I appreciate your prayers Shalom, Notadoc |

http://www.mndaily.com/articles/2006/04/21/68146 Study rethinks uranium danger By JP Leider April 21, 2006 Uranium, in its many forms, might be best for powering nuclear plants, shielding soldiers from harm’s way and busting enemy bunkers But in the scientific community, uranium is recognized as a noteworthy element, not only for its real world applications, but also for its elemental properties — it is a weakly radioactive heavy metal. Military use of depleted uranium, a byproduct of enriching natural uranium for munitions or nuclear power, has been a point of contention since its first widespread use in the first Gulf War, in which 320 tons were used. The effect of radioactive material on living cells is well-documented but, until recently, the chemical properties of depleted uranium and how it affects living cells was not delineated. A study put out by a woman originally from St. Paul proposes to change all that. Diane Stearns, a professor at Northern Arizona University, published a study that suggests the mechanism by which depleted uranium affects mammalian cells. Stearns said the study, which was put out by Northern Arizona University’s Native American Cancer Research Partnership, came out of interest expressed by American Indian tribes. In the 1940s and 1950s, when uranium mining began in the Southwest, miners, many of whom were Navajo, were exposed to uranium and its carcinogenic daughter products such as radon. Some of the exposed miners developed lung cancer. In 1990 the U.S. government issued the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which sought to compensate people who developed cancer and other illnesses from nuclear testing or uranium mining. Stearns said her study focused on uranium as a heavy metal, rather than as a radioactive material. “The big thing that we found is when you expose cells grown in the laboratory to uranium and isolate the DNA, it has uranium bound to it,” she said. “It could have effects as a radioactive metal because you have uranium right next to the DNA, but it also has effects as a heavy metal.” Also, Stearns said, the mutations observed in the studies were different from what one would expect from mutations caused by radiation. Stearns said conclusions from the study should not be directly applied to human health. “We’re not trying to terrify everybody — this is what we found, so we reported it,” she said. “These are mammalian cells grown in the lab, not human.” At this point, Stearns said, it only “raises the question.” She said that hopefully the knowledge ultimately can be used to prevent harm. “If we understand its chemistry, hopefully we can understand how to prevent the damage,” she said. Bill Tolman, a McKnight and L.I. Smith professor in the department of chemistry and the Center for Metals in Biocatalysis, said the mechanism suggested by Stearn’s study is reminiscent of one of the most famous anti-cancer drugs, Cisplatin. “That drug has been found to cure several different types of cancer,” he said. “It’s a really important and very simple platinum complex. It works by binding DNA and changing its structure, ultimately leading to cell death.” Depleted uranium and the military Because of depleted uranium’s density (about 1.7 times that of lead) and its self-sharpening properties, it is widely used in projectiles, especially in anti-tank munitions. Some U.S. soldiers became extensively exposed to depleted uranium for the first time in the first Gulf War because of friendly fire and exposure to contaminated vehicles. Critics of using depleted uranium sometimes name it as the main or a secondary cause to what commonly are called Gulf War illnesses. However, there is substantial evidence to the contrary, said Melissa McDiarmid, medical director of the Veterans Affairs’ depleted uranium follow-up program. A possible link between depleted uranium and Gulf War illnesses has been reviewed by “celebrated, blue-ribbon panels who know a lot about this,” McDiarmid said. To date, she said, there is no evidence that depleted uranium could be responsible for Gulf War illnesses. McDiarmid’s program has followed 74 veterans of the Gulf War who were exposed to depleted uranium by friendly fire. The main finding of the program is that people who have been exposed to depleted uranium or have embedded depleted uranium fragments will have greater levels of uranium in their urine. The veterans in the program are separated statistically into those with high urine-uranium levels and those with low levels. To date, McDiarmid hasn’t seen adverse health effects in either category of veterans caused by depleted uranium. She said researchers do not see statistical differences in organ systems, which she called “a good thing.” “One of the reasons I think we haven’t seen any differences is because if you compared the urine-uranium burden of the soldiers I take care of to the burden that’s been measured and reported in workers (and miners) 40 or 50 years ago, the guys I take care of have much lower values,” she said. That is good news, McDiarmid said. “What that means is we haven’t passed a threshold that one might have to pass in order to start to see organ dysfunction,” she said. McDiarmid said her program always has focused on depleted uranium as a heavy metal, because tests show an affected person’s total radiation level is low. Another facet of McDiarmid’s program is the free test it offers to veterans who are concerned about possible exposure to depleted uranium. “Any veteran in the whole country who has any concern about potential exposure can access our program through their local VA,” she said. Not all people agree with the conclusions being drawn from McDiarmid’s study. Tedd Weyman, deputy director of the Uranium Medical Research Centre, said his organization has found elevated levels in U.S. soldiers and citizens from Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans. The Uranium Medical Research Centre is self-described as “an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1997 to provide objective and expert scientific and medical research into the effects of uranium, transuranium elements and radionuclides produced by the process of uranium decay and fission.” Weyman said the number of people affected, about 50 percent to 65 percent of the total number tested, are exposed to the radioactive heavy metal. He said these findings are “very troublesome for those that are dispersing it, like the army and the government and so on, because they don’t want people to know.” He likened questioning uranium’s effects on the body to asking about the damage associated with smoking. “The question represents the misinformation under which you have been propagandized,” he said. “In other words, uranium, as with all radionuclides, is an irradiating substance which releases particles into the environment.” Weyman said that if radioactive material is inside the body, it immediately is doing damage at the cellular level. “This is just fact,” he said. There shouldn’t be differences drawn between uranium and depleted uranium, he said, because the effects are the same. He said depleted uranium is 20 percent more radioactive than is generally accepted — about 80 percent the level of natural uranium. “It’s like saying which is worse: getting shot with 10 bullets or with eight bullets — what difference does it make?” he said. Weyman said uranium’s effect as a heavy metal and its radioactive nature both are important. Michael Kilpatrick, deputy director for Deployment Health Support in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, said there is no evidence to support depleted uranium affecting human health. He said studies conducted on animals suggest uranium’s toxicity should not be tied directly to humans. “The information is based on animal studies where, if you give an animal a very high blood level of uranium or depleted uranium in a very short period of time, it will cause kidney failure,” he said. What’s interesting, he said, is that the level that causes kidney damage in animals is being exceeded in some of McDiarmid’s patients with fragments in their body, and their kidneys have adapted and are functioning normally. Kilpatrick said the issue continues to be studied because people continue to be exposed. “We are very concerned about the health of our men and women in uniform; we have a policy to do the testing should they be exposed,” he said. “We know that as long as it is outside of their body it doesn’t pose any health risk to them at all.” |
