Dad was happiest polishing his 1980 Chevy Malibu
out in the driveway. When I'd turn up for a visit,
he'd look up from his work and flash me an A-OK.

That had been Dad's special sign ever since I was a girl.

He let me know he was there with me, no matter what
was going on.

Dad left the car to Mom after he died.
She drove it until the chrome felll off and
we had to stick it on with masking tape.

There was no missing her coming down the street
in Dad's beat-up old Chevy. Nobody drove that model
anymore.

Mom sold the car when she failed her driver's test.
Then Alzheimer's forced her into a nursing home.

I visited her each day but she slipped farther and
farther away from me. As far away as Dad was.

I broke into tears on my way home one
afternoon. Mom had had a particularly bad day and
I was exhausted. I didn't know how long I could go on
this way.

"I'm all alone in this, God, " I complained. "So all alone."

I wiped my blurry eyes and checked in the rearview mirror.

An old Chevy was behind me. Not just any old Chevy, either.
I slowed down. The car pulled up alongside me. Close enough
for me to see the tape!

I couldn't get a fix on the driver, before the Chevy turned
left at the corner and disappeared from view.

Another hard time in my life, and I was far, far from alone.
